Frequently Asked Questions
Real questions.
Honest answers.
No rehearsed talking points. No deflection.
These are the questions I hear most often — before a discovery call, during one, and sometimes in the days that follow. I've answered them here the way I'd answer them in person: directly, without performance, and with genuine respect for the weight of what you're considering.
"Every question on this page arrived through a real conversation. None of them are naive. All of them deserve a real answer."
— Desmond GriffithsBefore we talk, I want you to actually know.
Reaching out to a coach for the first time — or for the first time after a bad experience — takes something. You're considering letting someone into the most consequential parts of your life or work. That deserves more than a polished FAQ written to move you toward a sale.
These answers are written to help you decide honestly — including whether working with me is the right choice for you at all. The first conversation we have should be the second thing you know about how I operate. This page is the first.
If something you need isn't here, you can send me a message directly — and I will answer it personally.
Trust & Safety
The questions you carry before you say a word. These matter most — because if the answers don't land right, nothing else does.
01What happens to what I share? Who has access to it?
02Will I feel pressured to sign up during the discovery call?
03What if I share something and it changes how you see me?
04Can I speak with someone who has worked with you?
05My partner or family doesn't fully understand what coaching is. How do I explain this to them?
Is This Right for Me?
The questions people use to determine whether they belong here — and the fears they're actually asking about.
01How do I know if I'm actually ready for coaching?
02Who do you work best with? Describe your ideal client.
03What if I've tried coaching before and it didn't work?
04I'm not sure whether I need coaching, consulting, or something else. How do I figure out which doorway is mine?
05What if I start and realize it's not working for me?
06What if I don't follow through on the work between sessions?
Coaching vs. Therapy
The most universally asked question — and one that deserves a clear, honest answer rather than a diplomatic one.
01What's the actual difference between coaching and therapy?
02I'm currently in therapy. Can I also do coaching?
03What happens if something comes up in our work that feels like it needs therapy?
04Is coaching a real profession, or is it unregulated and therefore unreliable?
How It Works
The questions about structure, access, and what actually happens — before, during, and between sessions.
01What does a discovery call actually look like?
02What happens in a typical session?
03What happens between sessions — am I on my own?
04How long does an engagement typically last?
05Do sessions happen in person or virtually?
06What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
07How will I know if the coaching is actually working?
The Investment
Money questions deserve direct answers — not deflection, not pressure, not false urgency. Here is how fees work, and why this work is worth taking seriously as an investment.
01How does pricing work? What should I expect to invest?
02Is this worth the financial investment? What kind of return can I expect?
03My employer might fund this. How does that change the engagement?
04How do I think about the long-term value — not just during the engagement?
About Des
The questions about credentials, lived experience, and why this specific person — not just a coach.
01What are your credentials, and do they actually matter?
02You work across coaching, consulting, and integration. Does that breadth dilute the depth?
03Why did you become a coach? What's the actual reason?
04Do you have a coach yourself? Are you still doing your own work?
Still sitting with
a question?
Everything on this page emerged from real conversations. If something you need isn't here — or if you've read all of this and still aren't sure — that uncertainty is worth bringing directly. I answer personal messages personally.
The first conversation
is a discovery —
for both of us.
No pressure. No performance. Just an honest conversation about where you are, where you want to go, and whether this is the right fit. Received with respect, confidentiality, and care.
